Coming to us from photography Eli Infante is this 33-minute long retouching tutorial that covers a whole range of processes you might want to subject your portraits to in Photoshop. Eli classes it as an “intermediate” tutorial, focusing on some slightly advanced techniques including Frequency Separation, Dodge & Burn as well as colour grading. But Eli also touches on some of the other important aspects of processing portrait photography and Photoshop in general, including Camera RAW, Selective Colour and Colour Balance, to produce a fantastic final result.
Retouching to this extent isn’t something that most of us do all that often. Could you imagine spending this much time to tweaking each of the individual portraits and group photos from a wedding? No, of course not. It’s a ridiculous idea (unless, perhaps, you have a whole team working on them).
But occasionally, we might want to do this to a handful of specific images from a wedding or larger client session. Or, perhaps you’re only delivering a handful of images anyway from a smaller session. Or it’s “fashion” or a commercial portrait shoot, in which case you actually may want to do it for all of them. Either way, videos like this are always fantastic to watch. Seeing somebody else’s workflow, especially when they’re constantly evolving and updating it over time, can be a great way to pick up some new editing skills, even if you only use a fraction of the tips and techniques they contain in your work. How much time do you spend editing each of your portraits? [via ISO1200]
