We have heard of multiple cases of sexual misconduct in the photography industry. The latest case was revealed only a few days ago. There’s a dark side to modeling, where models are exploited and harassed by photographers who abuse their power. In this video, Jessica Kobeissi talks about this dark side of modeling. She mentions many examples she’s heard of and this video will be useful for both models and photographers. If you’re a model, this video will help you recognize “red flags” and stay away from predators. And if you’re a photographer, there are plenty of useful tips on how not to be perceived as “that guy.”Advertisements

Before we go any further, it’s important to note that both male and female models are abused in a variety of ways. Jessica points this out at the very beginning of the video, and it’s important that you protect yourself no matter if you’re a guy or a girl.

In the video, Jessica discusses some important points and shares plenty of examples from models who suffered harassment. She gives you some helpful advice to recognize these photographers before you even get into an unpleasant or dangerous situation. As Jessica notes, predator photographers often aim at new and inexperienced models, or at people who are vulnerable and insecure. There are certain “red flags” to pay attention to. For example, abusive photographers often offer “special opportunities” in exchange for something. They might also flirt with potential models, or even blackmail them. And sadly, those are only some of their tactics. Jessica also notes that the abuse isn’t necessarily physical, but it can also be verbal. Again, she lists many examples which you can hear in the video. She discusses the reasons why some models don’t say “no,” and their discomfort isn’t shown in the images. Other than her own opinion, Jessica also shares experiences and tips from fellow photographer Jon Sams. The video is almost an hour long, but Jessica talks about an important topic that needs to be talked about. She covers lots of topics and shares tons of useful tips, and as I said, you’ll find it helpful no matter if you’re a model or a photographer. [The Dark Side Of Modeling | Jessica Kobeissi]
