Sony has revealed the world’s first Full-Frame PTZ (Pan/Tilt/Zoom) interchangeable lens camera with their brand new FR7. Aimed firmly at live productions and cinema, the camera is fully compatible with the entire range of over 70 Sony E-mount lenses. This is quite a game changer in terms of PTZ cameras, and DIYP was excited to find out more about the FR7. Here we talk to Hiroaki Nakao from Sony who walks us through the key features.
The FR7 is part of Sony’s Cinema Line and has some impressive specs. It’s a full-frame PTZ Interchangeable Lens camera with 15+ stop dynamic range. It is capable of shooting 4K at 120fps, and boasts Fast Hybrid, Real-time Eye AF and face detection for keeping dynamic and fast-moving action in perfect focus.
The camera also has built-in electronic ND filters and is fully compatible with robotic and remote functions. It can be controlled via an app and tablet or can be hooked up with the IP500 console and controlled with a joystick for more precision. “This is a completely new concept,” says Hiroaki, “so of course, live production is our target customer. But also the cinema side,” he adds. Indeed, what makes this camera so unique is the huge variety of lenses that you can use with it. Even the longest lenses that Sony makes are possible to use, according to Hiroaki. He does clarify though that those would need extra support to manage the weight, however it is totally doable. This should open up a whole new bag of creative options for filmmakers that previously would have needed ultra-expensive specialised cine-lenses. The Fr7 is available to pre-order now for $9,699 for the body with expected shipping in November.
