Remember when Yashica raised $1.28 million on Kickstarter for their Y35 digiFilm camera a few months ago? Well, now they’re back with a few crucial updates to satisfy their backers’ requests. It now includes a bigger sensor (which is unfortunately still not APS-C size), and a f/2 lens among other changes.

The Yashica Y35 is technically a digital camera that looks like the analog classic Yashica Electro 35. But what makes it different from others is that it lets you use faux film cartridges to apply film effects to your images. Right now, the available cartridges for the digiFilm system include:

ISO 200 Ultra FineISO 1600 High SpeedBlack and WhiteYashica Blue120 Format (6×6)

The concept is fun, but some photographers don’t consider it a real camera at all. Apart from the toy cartridges, some also think the sensor is too small for serious applications.  Nevertheless, the fact that it raised a million dollars means a lot of people are still interested in it. Could it be because of Y35’s weird approach to photography? Nostalgia? Or both?

Yashica plans to release the camera in July 2018 for $200. The original release date was supposed to be in last month. However, the Y35’s designers had to return to the drawing board to accommodate a few of their fans’ suggestions. If you’re curious how the latest design looks like, then keep scrolling.
