Earlier this year, Canon announced six new lenses along with the Canon EOS RP, the new mirrorless camera. There was no word on when they were going to be launched, but the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM is now ready for preorders. It’s the first lens of the announced batch to be launched, so let’s see what it has to offer.

Most portrait photographers I know swear by the 85mm lenses. So I believe that the new RF 85mm f/1.2L USM lens will make portrait photographers particularly interested. The large aperture allows a small depth of field and it’s useful in low-light situations.

The lens features Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics element, which helps to eliminate color fringing and chromatic aberrations. Additionally, one aspherical element and one UD element also help to control aberrations and distortions. As for the autofocus, the lens is equipped with Ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM). Along with optimized focusing algorithms, a high-speed CPU, and an internal focusing design, Canon promises fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance. This lens is also weather-resistant, protecting the optics against dust and moisture.

Here are the rest of the specs: There have been rumors that Canon is also launching the “holy trinity” of lenses soon: RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM, RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM and RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM. However, only the 85mm f/1.2 has officially been launched, and you can preorder it here for $2,700. The shipping starts in June 2019.
