Judging from recent patent applications from Canon, we might see two new zoom lenses for the EOS R system: a 17-70mm and a 52-83mm f/1.2 lens. They both include multiple optical formulas, which could mean that we’ll see them in production in the future.

Canon 17-70mm f/3.5-5.6

According to the patent, the 17-70mm lens will come with the aperture range between f/3.5 and f/5.6. There are three optical formulas discussed in the patent for this lens:

Focal length 17.40 35.02 68.69F-number 3.57 4.18 5.85Half field angle (degrees) 51.19 31.71 17.48Image height 21.64 21.64 21.64Total lens length 149.59 133.68 150.50BF 13.43 27.63 57.99

Canon 52-83mm f/1.2

Another lens has a pretty weird zoom range of 52-83mm. However, it will probably be marked as 50-80mm (and it’s still pretty unusual). For this lens, there are two optical formulas in the patent:

Zoom ratio: 1.60Focal length: 51.50 – 64.01 – 82.52 mm: 1.24Half angle: 22.79 – 18.67 – 14.69Lens length: 201.66 – 204.48 – 204.68 mmBack focus: 22.89 – 23.95 – 25.47 mm

Zoom ratio: 1.60Focal length: 51.50 – 64.01 – 82.52 mm: 1.13Half angle: 22.79 – 18.67 – 14.69Lens length: 220.20 – 225.05 – 224.20 mmBack focus: 6.51 – 6.53 – 8.64 mm

Since the lenses are still just patents, we don’t know when and if they will go in production. Since the EOS R system is still relatively new, there aren’t too many lenses available for it yet. You can get the “holy trinity” of zoom lenses and a few primes from Canon. All the other lenses are coming from third-party manufacturers such as Lensbaby, Venus Optics, Mitakon or Meike. So, I believe Canon will certainly launch a few more models. Whether those will be the 17-70mm and a 52-83mm, I guess we have to wait and see.
